A few weeks ago a young friend sent me one of those inspiring messages that circulates on the Internet. As I followed the clever drawings to the bottom of the page, a line jumped out at me, "be kinder than necessary." I stopped reading and started to reflect on the deeper meaning of that simple phrase.
At first some childish questions started to surface - How much kindness is necessary? Maybe I only need to be kind when it is necessary? Does this mean I have to be kinder to everyone? If I go just a tiny bit over, is that enough?
Then I began to think about my every day experiences and wondered if I could have been kinder or if I only go as far as necessary.
